Kinabatangan River Safari - First Class Wildlife Experience!

Kinabatangan river safari is one of the most under rated tourist attractions in Malaysia and is your best bet to experiencing Sabah's wildlife at its finest.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Kinabatangan River or better yet, Kinabatangan wildlife sanctuary is one of only two known places on Earth where 10 primate species can be found.

Other than the primates as well as birdlife, you might be lucky to witness Asian elephants bathing in the river or the Sumatran rhinoceros along the river.

Do not be surprised when you find saltwater crocodiles in this part of the river because the lowland forest and mangrove swamps near the coast provide sanctuary for them.

Pygmy Elephants

With all these diversity going around, it is no wonder Kinabatangan wildlife sanctuary is the best destination to get close-up and discover its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitats. To soak yourself in in all these over whelming experience, the best way to do so is to cruise up and down the Sukau Kinabatangan River!

Sighting of various endangered wildlife such as the Proboscis Monkey is common while you are cruising along the river.

Bird-watchers would find Kinabatangan simply incredible while they spot incredible bird species from the famous Borneo's hornbills to the rare Storms storks.

While you are cruising along its mangrove swamp estuary, you will be pleasantly surprised by the unique and rich ecosystem and the concentration of wildlife in the lower reaches of the Kinabatangan River safari.

Besides river cruises, you can also opt for guided night walks through the jungle. You can even stop at the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary as well as Gomantong Caves while you are exploring Kinabatangan River.

It is best to arrange your visit to the Kinabatangan River carefully as you do not want to be there while it is flooded during December and January, the wettest part of the year.

April to October is definitely the best time to spot various wildlife as it is the main flowering and fruiting season.

Getting there

Kinabatangan River Safari

First and foremost, you would have to reach Sandakan or Lahad Datu.

Since independent travel to the river is frustrating and difficult due to the fact that this region is still fairly remote, it is advisable to arrange a trip with a local tour agency there.

If you still insist on exploring alone, you can ask the bus to drop you down along the Sandakan-Lahad Datu highway at the Central Administration for Kinabatangan which is Kinabatangan Town. From there, you can ask for local transport and fishing trips from the riverside villagers.

If you are a nature-lover travelling in Borneo, Kinabatangan river is definitely one of the best tourist attractions in Malaysia and is absolutely the highlight of your trip and you would love what Kinabatangan River Safari has in store for you.
