Via Ferrata Walk The Torq
A Great Alternative to Climbing Mount Kinabalu!
So what is Via Ferrata? It is an Italian word for iron road. From its name you can imagine that it is a protected mountain pathway which consists of a string of rungs, rails, cables and bridges embracing the rock face. So what is the Torq? The Torq or Mountain Torq is located at Mount Kinabalu's Panar Laban rock face.
It is definitely everyone's dream to climb up the Borneo Kinabalu Mountain, the highest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and South East Asia. Situated in Kinabalu National Park, it is Malaysia's first national park as well as Malaysia's first World Heritage Site.
However, climbing Mount Kinabalu is not an easy task. It takes concentration and focus to move on. Yet, to make things exciting, you can now experience an abundance of climbing Mount Kinabalu packages and also, a new way of climbing Mount Kinabalu.
Introducing: Via Ferrata Walk the Torq.
It is Asia's first via Ferrata and is considered the world's highest via Ferrata, next to the Marmolada West ridge in Italian Dolomites. Mount Torq starts at 3,400 meter and ends at 3,800 meter.
No climbing experience is needed as it is designed for those beginner or intermediate climbers to access rock faces which only expert mountaineers and rock climbers could reach.
Also, a trainer would be there to guide you so you can now enjoy the full experience of mountaineering like the experts via ferrata.
What is the attraction of the place
The summit trail begins at the Timpohon Gate which is located 5.5km from the Kinabalu Nature Park. Enjoy what the nature park has to offer you as you are hiking up the Borneo Kinabalu Mountain via ferrata.
One of the most notable features of the park would be Low's Gully. With its 1.6 km deep ravine stretching 10 km on the side of the mountain peak, you will definitely be awe with it.
After you reach the Pendant Hut, you are required to meet with your trainer whom will give you a via Ferrata familiarization. The early next morning (or midnight), you will continue your journey to Low's Peak to catch the sunrise.
Finally, you will begin your journey to Walk the Torq via Ferrata experience of climbing mount Kinabalu. Try walking like a monkey on the Monkey Bridge, zipping on the Tyrolean traverse as well as balancing yourself on the Balancing beam.
While you have fun at the via ferrata, don't forget to enjoy picturesque view around as you walk the Torq. Feel your spirit soar with the unforgettable and magnificent mountain view.
To start your extreme adventure, you would first have to reach Kinabalu Nature Park. From Kota Kinabalu, it is approximately 90 minutes away by road transportation.
You can either take a bus or take a cab or rent a car to reach Kinabalu Nature Park from Kota Kinabalu or Ranau. Of course, if you join a local tour, transportation is provided from your accommodation to the park.
Relatively, going to Kinabalu Nature Park is considered stress free and easy going.

1. MASwings Borneo Mount Kinabalu Climb
DAY 1 KOTA KINABALU - KINABALU PARK - PARK HOSTEL
Meet our driver at hotel lobby (1300hrs) / Airport (Evening) (Subject to Flight; suggested arrival Kota Kinabalu not later than 1530hrs) and proceed with 2 hours drive to Kinabalu Park. Upon arrival, proceed to Park Headquarters for check-in and climbing registration. You will be given a ID Tag to wear at all times. Free at own leisure to explore the area. Pre-climb briefing by park ranger at Liwagu Restaurant Basement starts from 1800hrs. Dinner at Balsam Restaurant and overnight at Kinabalu Park.
DAY 2 PARK HEADQUARTERS - TIMPOHON GATE - LABAN RATA
Breakfast and collect your packed lunch from Balsam Restaurant. Proceed to Park Headquarters and meet your Mountain Guide thereafter you will be transferred to the Timpohon Gate (Power Station) at 1,866.4m where the Summit Trail starts. From here, depending on individual's fitness level, it is an approximate 4 to 6 hour climb for the day. Packed Lunch on the way up. Dinner at Laban Rata and settle down early at Dormitory Bunk Bed.
DAY 3 LOW'S PEAK - KINABALU PARK HEAD QUARTERS - KOTA KINABALU
0200hrs. Wake up for preparation before journey to the summit, at 0230hrs-0300hrs climbs for approximately 3-hour track. There are ladders, hand railings and ropes to help you over the steeper parts. You reach the final destination at Low's peak, the summit of Borneo at 4,095.2m.
As you wait in the cold, dawn gradually creeps over the horizon, illuminating the darkness with the light of a new day. Watching sunrise at the top has been described by travelers everywhere as a life-enriching experience In clear weather, you can almost see all of Sabah spread out below. From this vantage point, you will also see a dramatic drop more than 1,000 m drop - Low's Gully.
A chasm stretching 16 km. in length, it separates the summit plateau into the western and eastern plateau. Descending back to the rest house before 10.00am. At around 10.00am, clouds usually begin to form. These swirling clouds could obstruct visibility. Breakfast at Laban Rata Resthouse and descend to Timpohon Gate. You will be then transfer to Park Head Quarters. You may obtain your climbing certificate and late lunch served at Balsam Restaurant. Return to Kota Kinabalu and drop off to your hotel.
Include: Return land transportation, Permit, Climb Insurance, Mountain Guide, Accommodation, Meals as stated, Entrance Fee, Meals & Certificate
Exclude: Travel Insurance, Beverages, Porter & Tips, Mountain Guides' overtime after 1800hrs during climbing.
